yesterday, one of the lovely pastors involved in our 'reflection pool', susan johnson, sent me a copy of a cartoon her mother clipped for her. i post it here for your enjoyment and it won't be the last time you see it!
one of our concerns in terms of faith as a way of life is exactly this tendency, which susan has talked about eloquently, to simply pick and choose what pieces of various traditions one wants to use for personal spiritual uplift. the cartoon is funny in part because it is lays bare the contemporary trend to extend our american love affair with choice above all else to the realm of the christian faith where we confess that we do not choose but are chosen. what happens to the faith when that basic shift from chosen to choosing takes place in a hyper-consumerist culture? well, i'm glad you asked. stay tuned for the next couple posts where i'm going to delve into rowan williams' reflections on atheism and a new book by ruth frankenberg on our culture of chosen religious practices. for now, anon, and +peace.
