advent and baptism

i love advent. i'm an advent christian.

all of you who read this and who don't know what advent is look here.

i was baptized on the first sunday of advent at ascension lutheran church in landover hills, maryland. so this sunday is my baptismal anniversary.

it is the longing i love about advent. life is so full of longing, of yearning, not in some facile sense of 'i'm longing for a new car' but of yearning for things to be made right (isaiah 2:4).

i think it is george steiner in real presences who speaks of our existence in the long saturday. it is not the same as the one saturday, the one between cross and resurrection, but rather the long saturday, the one between the coming of jesus as the messiah, the promised one, and the fulfillment of all things in him at his return. we're somehow living out that longing, that long saturday, and that is why i think of myself as an advent person, an advent christian.
