what better way to teach stewardship than raise day-old chicks? after lots of family conversations, last spring we decided to get chicks and keep about 6-8 chickens in our back yard. we've been preparing for a year now, learning how to care for them and building a new coop out in the back yard. just yesterday, they arrived! they were born friday at mcmurray hatchery in iowa and came by express mail to our common ground high school in new haven (a small and very cool alternative ecology high school)--we piggybacked on their order since a minimum order is 24 and we only got eight. so anyway, they're set up in our living room with their little box, heat lamp, water and feed. here are a couple shots of the kids on the first day. we had a special prayer at dinner, welcoming the chicks to our family.
