What the ELCA Could Learn from Obama's Abortion Speech at Notre Dame
When can you remember any speech by a sitting President of the United States that so ably discussed the role of sin in social life and the way it ought to impact our way of holding deeply held views as we engage those with whom we disagree? (I really hear the influence of Reinhold Niebuhr here). This speech was deep and offers the means for thinking through how I engage sexuality debates in my own denomination, the ELCA. I am in the midst of a couple post series on sexuality and especially homosexuality. And I hope that I can imbue my writing on these issues with something like Obama's winsome combination of self-assurance and self-doubt, a self-doubt rooted in knowledge both of my own sin and the importance of loving the neighbor to whom I owe my love most of all. Here's the speech, embedded form a handy new feature I learned today from Scribd, the YouTube of written documents.
